Over the past few weeks, netizens have been tweeting with #RIPJKROWLING, making the hashtag viral. The Harry Potter author has been facing a lot of anonymous hate online, what is it all about you ask? Let's Find out.
This polarizing reaction of netizens has to do with her new book 'The Ink Black Heart" which tells the story of a serial killer who dresses in women's clothing at night before going on a murder spree.
But, the reactions are not only a result of this book but also her extremely derogatory comments on Twitter involving transgender people. Some even said, that the "murder mystery" is not even good and reading it would give Agatha Christie a heart attack, while some suggested that certain excerpts from the book mirror her own experience of facing online trolls in the past.
What Happened in 2019?
JK Rowling faced intense hate and backlash online for supporting Maya Forstater, a researcher who lost her job over some transphobic comment she had passed.
JK Rowling has also tweeted some controversial tweets, one read,
"People who menstruate, I am sure there used to be a word for those people, someone help me out. Wumben, Winpund, Woomud?"
Here is what the cast of Harry Potter had to say about this
Daniel Radcliffe was the first one to release a statement concerning this matter
"I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself,” he said, “but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honoured to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment. Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.
According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and non-binary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and non-binary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm."
Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger also spoke out in support of the LGBTQ community
“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are. I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you, and love you for who you are,” she wrote in a series of tweets. “I donate to @Mermaids_Gender and @mamacash. If you can, perhaps you’ll feel inclined to do the same. Happy #PRIDE2020 Sending love x.”
Rupert Grint also posted concerning this whole issue
“I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers. Trans women are women. Trans men are men,” Grint said, according to the Sunday Times on Friday, June 12, 2020. “We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”
As a consequence, she lost a lot of Fans.
While some people have spoken up in her defence, many are still disappointed in her. One review read " She got so red, nude and mad with everything that's been happening online, she wrote a book about it"
What do you have to say about this? Are people blowing this whole thing way out of proportion or does she deserve this treatment after everything she has been saying online?
